2026 San Juan Mountains
Chicago Basin, CO
Jul 22—Jul 29, 2026
This epically strenuous 7-day backpacking expedition takes you into the famed Chicago Basin in the Weminuche Wilderness, with entry by historic steam train and surrounded by some of Colorado’s most iconic high-country peaks. This is a bucket list hiking destination in the Rocky Mountains you won’t want to miss!
This intermediate course is for those who have backpacked before and are comfortable hiking at altitude. You’ll hike above treeline into alpine tundra, navigate complex terrain, and experience elevations exceeding 12,000 feet. You’ll learn advanced map reading and off-trail navigation skills while traveling through areas where wildflowers bloom in harsh conditions and lakes reflect towering peaks. Conditions permitting, there will also be the opportunity to summit multiple 14ers (14,000 ft peaks).
The physical demands and extended wilderness immersion will challenge you while building resilience and patience. Daily dhikr, prayer, Qur’an recitation, and Islamic learning will keep you spiritually grounded throughout the journey.
