2026 Intro to Backpacking: Roan Highlands

Take your first steps into the world of backpacking in the stunning Roan Highlands of the Appalachian Mountains.

This 3-day introductory course takes you to Carvers Gap, one of the most scenic sections of the Appalachian Trail that straddles the NC/TN border. You’ll traverse sweeping grassy balds with panoramic 360-degree views, hike along ridgelines reaching nearly 6,000 feet, and experience the alpine-like meadows of Round Bald and Jane Bald.

Along the way, you’ll learn essential backcountry skills like map reading, outdoor cooking, and safety protocols. Experienced instructors will guide you through expedition planning and risk management. Daily dhikr, prayer, Qur’an recitation, and Islamic learning will keep you connected to your faith throughout the journey.

This course is designed for those new to backpacking who want a fun, safe, and inclusive environment to learn essential skills while connecting with the natural world and fellow participants.
