2025 Gila Wilderness Backpacking

A 5-day backpacking adventure through the Gila Wilderness, America’s first designated wilderness area, was completed in southwestern New Mexico.

Participants woke to the sounds of coyotes and deer as they prepared breakfast on their camp stoves. They explored the area’s unique ecology while ascending high ridges and wandering through ponderosa pine forests. Throughout the expedition, the group stepped back in time as they encountered ancient cliff dwellings and artifacts left by the Mogollon people. Daily dhikr, prayer, Qur’an recitation, and Islamic classes kept participants connected to their faith and purpose throughout the journey. Attendees successfully disconnected from the modern world and embraced the simplicity and challenges of the wilderness experience.
